Small town. Big antiques scene. Good coffee if you know where to look. Battle is one of those East Sussex towns that's easy to underestimate from the outside and genuinely worth a proper morning once you're there. Here's a route that works.
First stop: the high street antiques shops. Battle has a cluster of independent antiques and collectables shops within a few minutes' walk of each other, right along the high street. Worth doing all of them rather than just the first one you see, since the good stuff isn't always in the busiest-looking window.
Second stop: coffee, properly. There's a small independent café just off the high street that does a genuinely good flat white, the kind worth the ten minute queue on a Sunday. This is the halfway point in the route, and the right moment to sit down before the legs start complaining.
Third stop: the abbey grounds. Not shopping, but worth the walk. A proper reset before heading back, and a nice contrast to a morning spent indoors looking at cabinets of vintage glassware.
The whole route takes about three to four hours if you're not rushing, which you shouldn't be. Battle rewards slow mornings far more than quick ones. Go on a Sunday when the shops are open but the high street isn't overrun, and you'll come home with something you weren't expecting to find.
